1840-60’s Brass Stationary Stencil of Louisa Chatterson:

This is a beautiful small brass handmade and hand punched stencil with the name ‘Louisa Chatterson’ punched in it. These stencils were used to mark the front of school and regular books, envelopes, calling cards, diaries, journals, letters, clothing, fabric, quilts, and ephemera objects in general with the family names of the 19th c. ancestors.

It measures 2.5 × 1.25 inches, and is made of brass with a lip around edge. One would put ink or powdered paint in the stencil, and it would clearly mark their name on the object. The typography of the end result and text of Louisa has an Americana folk art feeling to it.

This old Chatterson brass name stencil was found in the area of Rhinebeck NY, a high Victorian era town in the areas of Ulster, Columbia and Dutchess County, New York State, NY.

We found a Louisa Chatterson who married Fred Spencer in Cairo and in Acra, New York NY, Greene County, 30 miles from the place where Found. Census records might read Frederick, or Fredrick Spencer. This may not be the same Louisa, but we surely bet so!

Size: 2.5 × 1.25 inches
